With a voice as smooth as a baby's bottom, Holly Macve releases the video for her twang laden Heartbreak Blues. Directed by Lauren Joy Kennett and Holly Macve, the video was filmed in Brighton at The Bee's Mouth — the very venue where Bella Union label boss Simon Raymonde saw her play at an open mic night, which ultimately lead to a record deal.
With “Heartbreak Blues,” Holly Macve completes her self-styled trilogy of videos from her forthcoming debut album, Golden Eagle. While "Corner of My Mind" drew from the solitary early morning hours in the Yorkshire landscape and "No One Has the Answers" explored the beautiful decay of an off-season resort town, "Heartbreak Blues" entices the viewer into a smoky cabaret, where a femme fatale has one man questioning his grip on reality. As one who has been intrigued by Hollywood icons like Veronica Lake and Anita Ekberg, Macve had the main character of the video embody old Hollywood-style beauty. After a failed search for the perfect dummy, Macve and Kennett found the mannequin named “Misty,” which was eventually chosen for the video, at the Bee’s Mouth, sunglasses and all.
Director Lauren stated how, “the concept for the 'Heartbreak Blues' was inspired by mid-century American film noir using low key lighting and exploratory camera compositions to entice and surprise, blurring the lines between fantasy and reality.” Through the movie-making pair’s recent fascination with David Lynch and Nicolas Winding Refn films, existentialist and surrealist writing, and dark realism, they were able to create a video that cultivated the mystery, haze, glamour, depth and underlying dark fantastical elements seen in the film.
