The new single by Singapore’s dreamy pop band is an easy listen as it wraps you in a cloud of chill beats and spacey, resonant guitar melodies. In Subsonic Eye’s “Sun Kissed Sin,” the lingering vocals in the track exude a hint of jazz, without disrupting the song’s airy and poppy low-beams.
The new track lends a glance into the new 10-track album Strawberry Feels, set for release on April 21st through label Middle Class Cigars. The hazy feelings of self-doubt, helplessness, and expressions of love which inspired the album are well-filtered, but not watered-down through the sound waves. Subsonic Eye has caught local attention, opening for bands like Yuck and The Fin in Singapore. The album excites as the band’s indie pop sounds umbrella the listener in a feeling of calm — like that of a misty, foggy day, much like the days they spend in their city of residence, Singapore.
We caught up with Subsonic Eye to get a feel for their hometown.
CC: What sounds and scents do you associate with your city?
SE: We feel like the city smells like fried food and grass. It sounds like vehicles at the busy roads and leaf blowers.
CC: How would you describe the current music scene?
SE: There’s something for everyone and we love it! It’s definitely growing over time!
CC: How does the design or the aesthetics of the city affect your creative proccess?
SE: Singapore is pretty small and in a way, restricting. It reminds us how we should work creatively within the space, you know? The apartment buildings are also pretty and aesthetically pleasing so we think it subconsciously inspires us to create music.
CC: Any underrated buildings or landmarks you love?
SE: There are a couple of places: Chong Pang or Tavistock Park to start off the list. The carpark at the People’s Park Complex in Chinatown is pretty nice too; it holds one of nicest laid-back bars called Lepark. There’s also another open rooftop carpark at Lucky Plaza that’s nicely surrounded by tall, bright buildings. You can enjoy a meal from Jollibee downstairs too.
CC: Biggest misconception about your city?
SE: That the people are just all about working and studying. There are brilliant people over here!
CC: Any flavors or aromas do you associate with your city?
SE: We are avid fans of salted egg so we would probably associate the city with everything doused in salted egg sauce. Hokkien mee, chicken rice, kaya toast and iced milo comes to mind too!
CC: Best time to visit the city?
SE: When it’s cold and rainy. We rather not go out when it’s hot and humid, honestly.
CC: Favorite outdoor activity?
SE: Snapping photos or football if you’re as active as our bassist!
