The New Museum is where we escape the busy concrete jungle that is downtown NYC for a few hours of introspective zen.
Just opened and on display through April 9, 2017 is the Raymond Pettibon exhibit, "A Pen For All Work."
The expansive collection takes up floors 2-4. Politics, religion, pop culture, Batman and Robin ... nothing is off limits. It's no secret that Pettibon is the brother of Black Flag's Greg Ginn and was tapped into the L.A. punk scene. Pettibon made a significant mark on said scene, creating cover art, posters, and flyers for Black Flag, Sonic Youth, Hüsker Dü, and more.
The artist designed the album cover for Sonic Youth's release Goo. This and other works of (album) art can be found on the third floor. We spent a bunch of time there, but leave ample room for wandering from gallery to gallery. Each piece strikes a chord, with its bold rendering of American culture and off color commentary.
Another must-see is the room dedicated to Pettibon's ocean of giant blue waves, inspired by his California youth. The aquamarine swells are eye catching and contemplative.
We recommend getting lost in it.
