Moody, driving rhythms, at times sullen and always deeply submerged in a turbulent pool of reflection, Nashville’s grungy psych-rock trio, The Grayces are making major waves. Garnering accolades nationally and internationally for their unique interpretations that are at once familiar and yet completely original, think The Dead Weather time traveling back to ancient Egypt to recover the mystic sarcophagus of Black Sabbath and you get a peek into the creative riches here.
The Grayces give us Westing, their sophomore effort, which debuts tomorrow (October 14) and picks up where their 2011 release Social Shock left off. Since that time the band has gone through many changes, evolving their sound to a tightly woven testament of heavy lessons learned.
The band — fronted by the charismatic lead singer and guitarist Iz Stone, Patrick Ward on bass and background vocals, and Chas Cantrell on drums and background vocals — gives us a few more clues to the creative inspiration for their new release.
“Westing is an ancient Egyptian representation of the journey the soul makes, separated from the body, following the sun as it sets in the west only to be renewed again, peaking over the horizon in the east. This being our first release since late fall 2011, and with the add of new drummer Chas Cantrell joining the lineup, we have collectively chosen this representation to be the title of our newest album Westing for The Grayces' October 14, 2014 music release. Individually and as a group we have experienced many heavy life situations in the midst of writing this album. With these life journeys inevitably comes change and growth. Westing is a peek into our musical, individual, and collective journey over the last couple years.”
