"Out of the city / and out of the misery" is where Reptile Youth frontman Mads Damsgaard promises to take us on the title track of their new EP Away, and we must say we are pretty tempted.
At six-minutes, "Away" is maybe the most intriguing track on the EP, full of lush, haunting soundscapes that cease to lose a persistent rhythm, peppered with lost and found noises running the gamut from melodic to scratchy; the songs on Away are like diving into a sonic pool and encountering chaotic and unidentifiable creatures along the way.
Each track is innovative; the five-track collection is varied enough to keep things consistently interesting, like "Keep On Moving" which is a slower, dripping rock song that highlights the sultry qualities of Damsgaard's vocals.
"It was the perfect combination of people to record these new songs with when the musical universe is equally open and requires talented people to pursue the ideas in the songs," Damsgaard says about working with bandmates Mads Tunebjerg, Rasmus Littauer, and Mads Berglund. "The recording process was absolutely magical."
